Nameless, Faceless: A Voice Crying In The Desert…
Welcome to xspozitor.com, a site dedicated to rightly dividing the word of truth.
A man once said, the Christian minister’s task is to stand behind an open Bible and not get in its way! There’s a lot more to it than that, of course, but in a somewhat blunt yet simple way, it does encapsulate the calling of an expositor. He is, therefore, to be a kind of ‘post-Pentecost, John the Baptist’, pointing humanity away from himself and to the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ through the faithful handling of the Scriptures.
Those who do this, however, are in a precarious position due to the public nature of this calling. By default, they naturally stand out, with all eyes fixed on them while they speak. Their personality, accent, demeanour and natural disposition all blend together to form the conduit through which biblical truth is mediated.
Thus, recognising the phenomenon of the ‘personality cult’ and the danger it places him and his hearers in, the minister must do all he can to avoid attracting attention to himself. In other words, his personality must never be allowed to eclipse or get in the way of the Saviour. Like John the Baptist, he must decrease while the Lord Jesus Christ, through his preaching, increase.
In reality, the expositor is as a ‘spiritual surgical nurse’ who must have all the Spirit’s instruments sterilised and ready for use. The moment the Spirit of Christ asks for a designated scalpel, it must be promptly placed into His hand, allowing Him to do His work of convicting the World concerning sin, righteousness and judgement and guiding the Church into all truth.
Consequently, no praise is to be given to the expositor, just as no family would ever seek to give thanks to the ‘scrub nurse’ after a successful operation. Gratitude, instead, belongs to the skilled surgeon.
And it is in this sense that the one expounding the Bible becomes ‘nameless’ and ‘faceless’, with only his voice taken and wielded by the Spirit of truth, which challenges and changes lives. For when the expositor’s words correctly unpack the Scriptures as Christ Jesus had taught the apostles to do, it is the voice of Christ that is being heard.
